Season 4, Episode 4: "Eggtown"
LOCKE:
- This episode opens up with Locke's eye - back in the first season almost every single episode opened up closeup on someone's eye. You are led to believe that episode is going to be from the "point of view" of that person, although this week it was Kate, not Locke as the opening would suggest. The eye is an interesting symbol, as Locke had previously said that he has "looked into the eye of the island."
- Locke is now coming off as a "dictator" - he even makes a point that this is NOT a democracy. He is calling the shots now. Interesting that he is living in Ben's house, pretty much taking over Ben's "role" as the leader. Also he tells Miles, do you know who I am? My name is John Locke, and it is my job to protect this island. He seems to believe that he is almost God-like. Since when did he get this authority? And since when is everyone actually listening to him? I am surprised that no one is fighting back.
KATE:
- Kate was acting weird around Aaron when Claire asked her to hold him. Also when Sawyer asked about her being pregnant she was also weird in answering. She tells him she knows she is not pregnant, and says she is absolutely sure. How can she be so sure? I think she knows that she cannot have children and therefore could not be pregnant. When Sun took the pregnancy test earlier, she asked Kate if she had ever taken one and she said yes. I am guessing that when Kate was married (for that brief time) and playing into the role of housewife there for awhile, maybe she was trying to get pregnant and learned that she couldn't. That way on the island she can be sure she is not pregnant with Sawyer's baby. I'm wondering if that is also why she did not want Aaron brought into the trial, or for her mom to see him. If there was any question as to whether or not he really was her child (they could have questioned it in the court), then she may have been afraid the truth would come out.
- The biggest question on my mind is what happens to Claire? Does she die? Why is Kate raising Aaron? It is interesting, also, because way back when, the psychic told Claire that she would not raise her baby, and it turns out she isn't. I am wondering if that is by choice or not - maybe something happens and she chooses to stay on the island (doubtful, but you never know what could happen). Maybe she gives Aaron up to Kate, because she truly feels like she was supposed to give up the baby (that was her FATE). Or if she does die, does Kate "save" Aaron and feel obligated to raise him? Also there is some reason why Jack does not want to see him. At first I assumed because it was Sawyer's baby (she said "I can understand why you don't want to see the baby") but now that we know it is Aaron, why would Jack not want to see him? Clearly he is still in love with Kate, and it seems like he wants to start something up with her, but she tells him until he can come to her home and see the baby, that's it for them. Why won't he see him? Maybe he had something to do with Claire's death (assuming she does die) or that he couldn't save her? Also let's not forget that Claire is Jack's half-sister, maybe in the time since they were rescued he found that out, and that making Aaron his nephew, maybe he just doesn't want anything to do with him because he realizes that his father - who he hated - was Claire's illegitimate father?

- Another big question is how long do we think they were on the island? Because we know, at present time, they have been on the island a little over three months (I think about 90 days), and we also know that Aaron was born ON the island - so he is no more than three months old right now. In the flash-forward, he looked to be about 2 or 3 years old...so assuming Kate's trial started about six months after getting back home...that would mean they are on the island for quite some time before getting rescued. Which I have been saying all along. I don't think they are getting off the island anytime soon, and I definitely don't think that the people from the freighter are their way off. So it seems like they are going to be on the island for about a year and a half, based on Aaron's age. Actually, I think Ben is the one that gets them off the island - possibly in exchange for his "protection" from these people - as we saw tonight he clearly has more power and ability to make things happen. So maybe they are on the island for another year or so - during which time this "war" ensues between the freighter people and the survivors. Hence, seasons four and five...I think we won't see them actually get "rescued" until season 6.
- One more thing...regarding Kate's flashforward. When she first gets out of the car with her lawyer to go into the court, and there are throngs of reporters and media there...there is one guy who jumps into the crowd and yells something at her. He is this big burly man with a big scruffy beard, almost sounds like he says "what did you do to her" or something along those lines. i'm wondering if this is someone after her just like the guy who was questioning hurley about what happened to the rest of them - almost seems like the oceanic six are all getting "visitors" from the dharma (or whoever) group wanting to know the truth about what happened on the island, who is still there, what they did, etc. Maybe they know that something happened to Claire and is playing into her "guilt?" Here is a screencap...he kind of looks familiar, any thoughts who he might be?

THE FREIGHTER:
- We know for certain now that the helicopter has not in fact made it to the freighter. I sort of suspected this. The main reason being that clearly it is very difficult to find (or leave) the island. When the helicopter took off, they told the pilot to make sure he follows the EXACT coordinates they took to get there. And when they did first arrive on the island, they got caught in an "electrical storm" that caused them to crash and have to parachute out. And if you remember when Ben let Michael go, he gave him a boat and gave him exact coordinates to follow - obviously there is only one specific way in or out of the island. I think the island's electromagnetic field causes some kind of portal that can only be accessed a certain way. Remember also when we first met Desmond, living in the hatch? He said that after he crashed his sailboat on the island, he tried to leave but only ended up sailing around in circles, he couldn't seem to get anywhere. Obviously there is only one way on and one way off the island, which is why the helicopter has not yet made it back to the ship. It is just like the reference to the CS Lewis book that we saw a few episodes ago (Charlotte Staples Lewis and the Chronicles of Narnia - which references a world where a time portal exists and the characters travel to/from worlds through this "portal.")
- Another strange thing was that Charlotte was quizzing Miles on his memory of three cards. He could only remember two out of three, and he even had trouble with that. She said it wasn't bad, that it was an improvement. What happened to his memory? Did something happen on the freighter, or as a result of their helicopter going down? Maybe something happened to him when they got caught up in the "electrical storm" while trying to land on the island. Clearly something happened to him. Kind of weird.
THE OCEANIC SIX:
- So we also finally find out what the "oceanic six" are all lying about. They made up a story about their experience on the island. They said that they were the only survivors (actually jack said 8 of them survived the crash, that they landed in the water, and kate saved 5 of them, and tried to save two others who didn't end up making it). They are lying about the whole story. Like Kate said at the end, jack has said the story so many times it is almost like he believes it now. So we definitely know that when these six leave the island and get rescued, the rest of the world thinks they were the only survivors, that they were "deserted" on this island, and of course no idea about the Others, Ben, Dharma, any of that. This is the secret they are having to keep. Of course that is what we all figured, but atleast now that is confirmed. The question is, what has happened in the future from the point that we saw Jack after Kate's trial to the point where he meets her at the airport and he is disheveled, drinking, and wanting to go back to the island? Is it just the guilt of lying about everything that gets to him over time, or does some event occur that makes him want to go back. What happens in the future to cause Jack to go into such a downward spiral - to the point of wanting to kill himself?
BEN:
- Something else that intrigued me was when Miles was talking to Ben, he says "don't talk to me like I'm one of them, like I don't know who you are." Who exactly is he?? And like he said, why is it they think he can come up with $3.2 million in just a few days. From everything we as viewers have seen of Ben, we know that he is in charge there on the island, but we have had no reason to believe thus far that he has any stance OFF the island. Clearly he does, or Miles would not speak to him like he was someone who is "big time" so to speak. Obviously Ben has some secrets, and like I said last week, I do think that he can still communicate with the outside world, leave the island, etc. - he is just not telling them that. Locke thought the submarine was the only way off, but I think Ben has a way that no one else knows about...this "portal" that only he knows how to access. Obviously this group of people wants to find him pretty badly - my gut tells me it is because he killed off all the original Dharma members and they are there for revenge - but there is something else more to that story that they know about Ben.
- One very interesting quote during that confrontation...Miles asks Ben, "do you know who I work for?" Ben replies yes. Miles says, "then you know that my boss spent alot of time and energy looking for you." - This is similar to the statement that Penny said to Desmond after she "found" him at the stadium, she said that with money and determination, you can find anyone (something along those lines). Kind of a similar line...that led me to believe that Miles' boss is in fact Penny's father (which I have thought for some time that he has something to do with Dharma and this group of people on the freighter).

3 Comments:
In last season's season finale, Kate says to Jack that "he" wouldn't like it if she were there with him. Perhaps that "he" is not Sawyer as once thought... it's Aaron, now perhaps 4-6 years old.
I think something obviously triggered Jack's downward spiral sometime between Kate's trial and him growing a beard and losing it.
I don't think Jack is avoiding seeing Aaron out of guilt for Claire's possible death. He seems too cheery when he flirts with her by the cab. There must be something more to it.
There's got to be some significance to 3.2 million - no idea what.
Down the road, I'm betting Kate will break her deal and "leave the state" for some reason.
When Kate was firm with Sawyer that she knows she's not pregnant, my g.f. blurted out - "she got her period." Could it be that simple?
Or perhaps does she have some abuse in her past from daddy that left her infertile - all the more reason to blow him up.
Keep up the great blog.

I kind of wondered when Charlotte and the physicist were doing the three card deal, if the island messes with your memory. It seemed like they were doing another experiment. The last experiment had to do with the island's quirks, so I wondered if this one did as well.
I love your theory about Penny's dad leading the search for the island/the others. I think you are on to something with that theory.
I think guilt has played into Jack not wanting to see Aaron. It seems that guilt is eating up all of the Oceanic 6.
I wonder who the other two are that the public was told survived the crash initially, but didn't make it back home. I understand it is all a lie, but I'm curious as to what that whole lie is.
A missed thought - last time we saw Miles he was pressure-chewing a grenade placed in his mouth by Locke...hmmm...
