Season 3, Episode 6: "I do"

The title of this episode is "I DO" which refers to Kate getting married. (We knew that Kate was married when she and Sawyer played a game of "I Never" once and she revealed that she had been married before. This is also when she revealed to him that she had killed someone.)

This was a Kate episode. Kate's flashbacks were meant to show us that she runs from those she loves. She supposedly did love her husband Kevin, yet she still ran away. However, on the island, she is in love with Sawyer and has had several opportunities to run away (since she can easily get out of her cage) yet she choose to stay with him.

Interesting that she married a COP (while being a fugitive herself) and then left him. He always talked about how honest and real she was. She couldn't handle the "normal" life of being a housewife, and she ran away, just like the Federal Marshall told her she would. However, on the island, she falls in love with another fugitive (Sawyer). She had a choice between Jack and Sawyer (kind of like good cop/bad cop) and she chose Sawyer. We also learned that Sawyer loves her too. When he asks her if she really meant it when she said she loved him, she doesn't answer him, but he responds "I love you, too."

MIND GAMES
I think the fact that Jack's cell was "conveniently" left unlocked was a setup. Ben knew that Kate and Sawyer were together, and he knew that Jack would see the video monitors. He wanted him to see it so that Jack would realize that Kate really loved him, and so he would perform the surgery. And it worked. Ben is really a master of mind games. He knows EXACTLY how to get to people. And I guess since they have been watching the survivors for the past three months on the island, has helped. This also explains why they captured Kate and Sawyer when they really only needed Jack. The past couple of episodes we were left to wonder why they chose to take only those three. Surely they had a reason for wanting the three of them. Last week we found out why they wanted Jack (for the surgery) but now we realize that they had to use Kate and Sawyer as bait so that Jack would cooperate. They knew if he refused, that they could threaten to kill Sawyer, and since they knew Kate cared about him, use her to persuade Jack (since they knew that Jack cared about her). This is why they've been watching them for so long, so they could learn who to use against Jack. He was really the one they wanted the whole time.

BEN/ALEX CONNECTION?
Just before Ben went under, he asked Juliet if Alex had asked about him. Even though she had (when she ran into the work area and she asked to see Ben), Juliet lied and told him that she hadn't. Why did she lie about it? I am wondering if Ben could be Alex's father? His "concern" for her seemed fatherly. (and we know that this show deals with alot of "father" relationships.) He could have used Danielle to get a child when she first arrived on the island 16 years ago - so he could have gotten her pregnant just for the sake of taking the baby since the Others obviously want children. And with the help of Juliet, who is a fertility doctor, they could have "used" Danielle to give them a child. This would explain why Danielle caught Ben in the net trap and handed him over to Sayid (she knew he would torture him) which is what she wanted - revenge on him for taking her daughter.

REST IN PEACE, MR EKO
As Locke is burying Eko, he reads on his stick - like it is a sign - the words "Lift up your eyes and look north." Underneath that it said "John 3:05" - This could be some kind of a direct reference that Locke was supposed to see. (hence using a passage from JOHN)

In the Bible, John 3:05 says - "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit."

Also...Ezekiel 8:5 says - "Then said he to me, Son of man, lift up your eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up my eyes the way toward the north, and see, northward of the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.

He said to me, Son of man, do you see what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel do commit here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? But you shall again see yet other great abominations.

He brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall.

Then said he to me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had dug in the wall, behold, a door."

This biblical passage almost suggests to me that Eko is leading him to find something...another hatch? Lift up your eyes and look north. Then the last line mentions digging in the wall and finding a door. This reminds me of how they found the hatches. Also, remember that when Locke first found the hatch, he felt that it was his "purpose" on the island. Maybe Eko is sending him a message? Whichever way is north may lead him to something on the island (or to the Others camp?) or something having to do with finding a "door" hidden behind a wall? Whatever it is, I think that Locke will (once again) feel that it is his "purpose" on the island to find whatever it is that is "north."

JACOB'S LIST
After Jack starts the surgery, the Others make the comment that "Shephard wasn't on Jacob's list." - who is Jacob?

In Biblical times, Muslims believe JACOB was a member of "the Elect/the Good." Also, in the old testament, Benjamin is the 12th and final son of Jacob (Israel), the patriarch of the Hebrews. Jacob also had a TWIN named Esau.

Okay here is my theory on this: I am thinking that maybe on the island, Ben has a twin (Jacob). Remember all the twin references we have seen before (and especially the book, "The Bad Twin.") Okay, so maybe Ben has a twin named Jacob? They were both raised on the island and grew up together, but at some point, one became good and one became evil. This could be Ben's constant reference to being a part of "the good ones" - maybe there is another group on the island that his twin leads, which is a part of the "bad" ones. Maybe we have even seen both of them at different times, but we have just always thought it was Ben. Now, if Jack lets Ben die, perhaps the "other" twin will come out and resume Ben's place. Just my own little theory, but it definitely would be a good twist! (and would explain all the "twin" references we have seen so far)

COUNT TO FIVE
Jack botches the surgery in an attempt to help save Kate and Sawyer. He tells her she has one hour to escape and to radio to him when she is safe. He asks her to tell him the story that he told her when she stitched him up, at their first meeting just after they crashed on the island. (He was telling her about his first spinal surgery, when he accidently ripped the base of the spine where all the nerves were, and he was terrified. He said at that point he knew he had to deal with it, so he would let the fear in, but only for 5 seconds, and that's all. He counted to five, and then it was gone. He sewed her up and she was fine. Kate responds that if that had been her, she would have run for the door, and Jack says "you're not running now." ) And now, Jack is telling her to run. And although he thinks he is helping and giving them one hour to "escape" - he still does not know that they are on a different island. So really they have no where to go.

The last line was Jack saying "Dammit, Kate...RUN!" She has spent her whole life running and for once she is not. She had the opportunity to escape, but she didn't want to leave Sawyer. And now she tells Jack that she won't leave without him. This is the first time in her life that she doesn't want to run. The Others have been watching her in the cage, so they had to have known she could get out of the cage (maybe that was their "test") - and she passed. She has shown that she is finally thinking about someone other than just herself - she wants to stay and save Sawyer. Does this mean that she has proven herself a "good" person?

Okay...well I guess I will see you in three months!!!! I will leave you with the previews for 2007:

Also, here is an article I found which explains what the producers had to say about what is to come in the rest of Season 3:

The producers of ABC's international megahit "Lost" Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have given yet another exclusive interview to TV Guide's Michael Ausiello disclosing some of their intentions for the upcoming episodes of the series.

The writing duo have explained that the second part of the 3rd season that begins on February 7 will focus on the fact that the island may have been seen by the outside world as disclosed last May in the closing moments of the second season finale.

Shortly after the show returns in February there will be a huge revelation or event involving a major character and then shortly after that a significant 'story bomb' that will change the show forever.

Also, the kids and the stewardess who were abducted by The Others (as seen in the '48 days' flashback episode last season) return in the second episode after the break and their disappearance is explained as is The Others' obsession with abduction of children. Juliet being a fertility doctor will play a role in that.

Juliet herself will shoot a character in the first episode after the break which will feature her flashback story. Speaking of flashbacks, we will learn how The Others lived on the island before the Oceanic flight 815 crashed, who they really are and why they are doing what they are doing. The producers had already said The Others are factional and there are "Other Others".

A flashback will also explain how the new characters Nikki and Paulo experienced all the events from the past two seasons from their perspective. Some other less prominent characters may appear in that flashback including Dr. Artz who blew up in the 1st season finale and the twins Steve and Scott, one of whom was killed, too.

Michael and Walt's storyline will again be addressed at some point in the future and we will find out what happened to them after they left the island, but not necessarily in the third season. Many of the questions will however be answered, including how Locke ended up in his wheelchair and how Jack got his tattoos.

The producers also said that the town we saw in the season premiere teaser where The Others live is not necessarily on the second island, which explains how they could get to the crash site and infiltrate the survivors within an hour. In fact, "the Alcatraz island" will be gone by the end of tonight's episode.

As far as time conceptions are concerned, those will also play a significant part in unlocking some of the mysteries. We will, for instance, see what happened to Locke, Desmond and Mr. Eko when the hatch imploded (and how Desmond ended up naked), but that may not necessarily be a flashback. Nor a flash forward. But it will be a 'flash-something'.

The show will prominently feature the 'Eye-Patch' guy who appeared on the hatch monitor in last week's episode. He is not Radzinsky. The African American character Ms Klugh who appeared in the final episodes of season 2 will be back, too. And we may see some other tailies, as well as Shannon and Boone.

The producers addressed criticism concerning never-ending 'Lost' mysteries, saying that in order to avoid the "Twin Peaks Laura Palmer Curse" (that show's mystery was explained midway through the second season effectively killing the show by the end of that year), they can not and will not answer all the questions (especially essential questions about core island mysteries) prematurely. But they promised they are not stringing the audiences along and all questions and mysteries will be explained by the end of the series.

Finally, the producers revealed that tonight's fall finale cliffhanger will be a more conventional "Jack Bauer goes on a slow boat to China" type of cliffhanger, but they hoped it would be good enough to incur a major frustration about the show's 13-week hiatus to bring back the audience in February. They did not say if that means Jack will be leaving the island tonight or not.

Hi,

Febbride, here. Did you notice that Jack said to Ben that he wanted him to keep his word and let him go because "I have to get off this island," and Ben said OK. Well, if Jack gets off "this island" that doesn't necessarily mean he's going anywhere other than the main island, but he doesn't know he's not on the main island, so Ben may use that to not let him go home.

Just a thought I had while watching.

I like your twin theory about Ben/Jacob.

I can't believe we have to wait 13 weeks. That's basically like waiting the entire summer!

First let me say thank you for your thoughts. I look forward to them each week. And I can't believe we have to wait until Feb.

Now I just had a thought about the twin theroy. Could there be some connection to the man with the eye patch? We need answers

Stacey, I think you may be on to something about a twin of Ben. I have noticed in some past shows on a close up of Bens face that sometimes he still has some scratches that still appear on his lips and face and yet on other close ups of his face there appears to be nothing. I didn't think too much of it at the time until you mentioned the twin thing in this blog. Have you noticed it as well or am I just thinking it because of what you said.
