Season 5, Episode 3: The Little Prince

Sorry I haven't posted yet! This has been a crazy week and I have had no sleep!

Anyway, the title of this episode is "The Little Prince." The Little Prince is a children's book. It tells about a young prince being stranded in the Sahara Desert (isn't this essentially what happens to Ben after he moves the island?). The author got his inspiration for the book from his own experience of being stranded after a plane crash. Interesting.

We also learn, once again, that Sun is not the innocent and coy woman she seems to be. We learned this back in season 3 in the episode "The Glass Ballerina" that she can be conniving and deceiving and capable of anything. Since returning from the island and back to the real world, she has successfully overtaken her father's company, and has managed to get in touch with Charles Widmore to discuss their common interest -- they both want Ben Linus dead. And judging from the scenes for next week, it seems she will have no problem attempting to make that happen herself.

Once again, the LOST writers are going all "Back to the Future" on us, when Sawyer sees Kate and Claire in the woods delivering Claire's baby. I am wondering what will happen if the "present" version of one's self can run into the "past" version of one's self. Part of me is expecting Marty McFly and the Doc to come running out of the jungle at any moment. LOL

One thing that does start to make sense, though, is the appearance of several "dead" people on the island in past episodes. Jack seeing his father, Ben seeing his mother (when he was a child), Mr. Eko seeing his brother...etc. - Could they be seeing them in the past? If those characters are actually traveling through time and "appearing" to the survivors in the present time during a time-traveling-flash?

We also see that Jin has washed up on the shore - alive! (Not that I ever thought he was really dead). What was even better is seeing the french-speaking crew that also washed up from a shipwreck. Immediately I knew that had to be Danielle's boat - and YES! As soon as I saw her pregnant belly, I yelled out to my husband, that's Danielle! Very interesting...so Jin has washed up ashore, 16 years in the past, and not having any idea about what has happened to the rest of his people.

I do think that these occurances are in fact changing the future. Because these things have never happened before, wouldn't it change things to come? Faraday claimed that you can't change things that didn't happen, but I don't believe him. Because all the survivors are changing things as they travel back and forth through time. For example, now that Jin has "met" Danielle Rousseau in the past, wouldn't that change the future of him seeing her again later on the island? That is why Locke was reluctant to go the route that would take them past the hatch (when the light came up), because he knew he would run into Boone and his "past" self, ultimately changing the future. I don't know. But, I believe that the reason the Oceanic Six must go back to the island is because they have to change the outcome of all the "bad things" that have happened as a result of their leaving. Meaning that you CAN change the past (or the future...whatever).

And speaking of the future, we learn that all of the other survivors have disappeared from their camp, and there are new boats that have appeared on the shore. Did they run away, or were they all killed? Too bad most of those people who were still on the beach were just extras (with the exception of Rose and Bernard), so we may not see too much of that storyline as all of the other main characters are either part of the Oceanic Six or are time-traveling with Locke, Sawyer and Juliet. But, atleast we know that at some point in the future, someone else comes to the island (sent by Widmore again?) and everyone on the beach goes MIA. So assuming this happens in the "future," I would assume that by the Oceanic Six coming back to the island, they could prevent whatever happened here from happening.

And, finally, more and more of the people on the island are suffering from the nose bleeds. First it was just Charlotte (who we know was born on the island), but now Miles and also Juliet. We know that Juliet has been on the island for several years, and it would appear that Miles has also been there before too (in a "past" life). When he tells Faraday he has only been there a few weeks, Faraday responds, "are you sure?" - I think that Miles has definitely been there in the "past" - which would also explain his ability to see the future...because he has been there before. The question is, what ultimately happens to those people with the nose bleeds. Do they die? Are they saved if they have their "constant" there? Maybe the Oceanic Six can save them by coming back (if some of them serve as their constants?)
