Season 2, Episode 9: "What Kate Did"
MORE FATHER ISSUES
Once again, another survivor with "father" issues. We learn that Kate kills her stepdad, who actually is her real father. I think the point of this is to show that Kate actually IS good. Even though she killed him, she did it out of love for her mom, who he had been abusing. She was trying to help her...yet it was her mom who turned on her and turned her in. I think this goes to show that Kate, although she got caught up in a whole series of crime sprees, it started out because she was just trying to do something GOOD for someone she loves, trying to help them. Yet her own mother turned her in. This also happens when Kate is staying with the farmer, and he eventually turns her in. Yet, she still saves him from the car after they have an accident, even though it keeps her from being able to
escape. She chose to do something GOOD rather than get away. She really does have a good heart. This is important because Kate obviously has issues thinking she is a bad person. She mentions several times that she is not good, her mom does not think she is good. There are tons of references in this episode with her talking about being "good." This is clearly important as we saw that the OTHERS are only taking good people.
FATE
Echo said to Locke, don't mistake coincidence for fate. Locke kept saying "what are the odds of that happening?" Locke has also talked a lot of fate and why they are on the island. Fate brought them there. Whereas Locke seems to have more of a feeling of fate
as destiny, and Echo seems to feel more like fate as a spiritual/religious implication.
THE MISSING PIECE
Echo started out telling Locke about the film reel with a biblical story. "From the beginning" - why not just tell him he found the reel? Kind of like saying...it was "fate" of God. He seems religious and spiritual... perhaps he believes that God put them all
there and put all the missing pieces together for a reason. Many Christians believe that "everything happens for a reason." I think the reason he told the story of the Bible before telling him about the film, was to emphasize his religious beliefs. The story he
told was about rebuilding, and instead of the gold, it was the Old Testament that helped them rebuild. They looked to the Book to rebuild. And then he said to Locke, we found a book too. Kind of like, all the answers come from the Bible. Both a figurative AND
literal meaning. Look to the Bible for answers, but also look to it for the missing piece of the film reel that was hidden in there.
SAYID ON TV
Sayid on the tv in the Army office where Kate's dad was. It looked like he was in handcuffs, being arrested. Timewise, we know this must have been a long time ago, as this was when Kate first was on the run after her original crime. Here is a screencap of the
image (closeup of his face, not of him in handcuffs):

PATSY KLEIN
Patsy Klein song playing in Kate's flashback - also the farmer was listening to Patsy Klein when he turned Kate in. The song was "Walking After Midnight" although Patsy's best known song is "Crazy" - Kate made several references of going crazy.
HOME SWEET HOME
When Kate takes Sawyer outside the hatch and into the jungle, he looks around and says "Home Sweet Home" - same thing when he and Michael were floating on the raft and washed up on the island, Sawyer says "Well look at that....we're HOME." I think that this is the
first place where Sawyer has felt like he belongs, like it's home. He has always been moving around from place to place, a life of crime and never formed attachments. I think he feels he has found a place, and a group of people, that is like home/family.
BLACK HORSE
Kate saw the horse after the car crash with the marshall when she escaped. She didn't noticed the horse until after she was driving away, but stopped a moment and realized it was the horse who "saved" her (causing the crash, and helping her to get away). She also saw the horse in the jungle...I think the horse represents feelings of "escape" and being "saved." She knows that now on the island she is free.
SAWYERS DREAM
While in a dream/coma, Sawyer says "I love her" (we assume he's talking about Kate, but it could be someone else). Also he grabs Kate and says "You killed me. Why did you kill me?" This runs Kate into the ground going crazy thinking Sawyer is the reincarnation of her dead father whom she killed. Why did Sawyer say this? What was he "dreaming" about that
caused him to say this? I think that maybe subconsciously he was saying that he feels dead (just like Sayid and Ana Lucia said they both are "already dead") Sawyer has also killed a man and feels guilt over it. Perhaps this "guilt" is eating at his subconscious (being in a coma) and that's what he was talking about. Maybe he was talking to the "real
Sawyer" (in his dream) saying "you killed me." Because of what the real Sawyer did to him, he messed him up and made him feel dead. Then, finally when he wakes up, he asks Kate "are we saved?" This can also be seen as a religious reference (being "saved").
KATE AND CRASHES
Kate has been in four crashes that allow her to escape. First, the one we saw in this episode with the marshall the first time after she was arrested. She escaped. Next, with Tom after leaving the hospital with him (and he gets killed) yet she manages to
escape by running away from the accident. Third, with the farmer who was going to turn her in. She ends up saving him from the car accident which is what ultimately gets her arrested and the Marshall finally has her in custody. The fourth crash is the plane
crash, and the FINAL escape for her! On the island, she is free...no longer being chased or hunted down by the FBI. (note the significance in this being the 4th crash where she is finally "free" - 4 is one of the "numbers.")
