Season 6, Episode 17: SERIES FINALE: "The End"

Wow.

Let me just say that again. WOW.

I loved it. I know a lot of people have their own interpretations and some will probably be disappointed. I, however, absolutely loved it. I thought it was the perfect ending. I was thoroughly satisfied throughout the entire 2.5 hours. I was very happy with the ending.

It will take me some time to come up with an organized recap, especially because I want to rewatch the series finale as well as rewatch the 2-hour pilot episode from Season 1 (so I can watch it now with the knowledge of how it all ends and see if I pick up on anything). I've had a lot of thoughts about the Series Finale so far, so in no particular order, here is what I think:

Let me start by offering what I believe to be the final "interpretation" of what actually happened in the finale. It seems that a lot of people are confused about it. Everything that happened on the island, did happen. Yes they crashed on the island (and they lived), they encountered the Others, six of them went back, then came back again, encountered the smoke monster and Jacob and then Jack taking over as the protecter. All of this did actually happen. The "alternate timeline" or "sideways reality" - did NOT happen. Basically, when they set of the hydrogen bomb on the island, they were hoping to "erase" the events of the past by causing their plane to never crash on the island, therefore changing their futures if they had never crashed on the island. The whole series of "sideways" flashes that we saw, where none of them knew each other but eventually did cross paths, was not "real." None of this actually happened in real life. What we learned is that, for each of them, at the time of their death...whether that was on the island or 50 years later.... each of them goes through this sort of stage of "purgatory" which is their eventual passage into heaven (into "the light.") This alternate reality IS their "happily ever after" - it is their mind's version of what they always wanted - reuniting them with loved ones, giving them the happily ever after that they never had in their real life. The ironic thing is that for each of them, their "happily ever after" consists of the people they were with on the island. All of them, as we learned from Jacob, were searching for something before the crash, and it was THE ISLAND that saved them. Each of them found what they were looking for on the island, in the relationships they developed there.

I think that the entire "alternate world" that we have seen through this course of flashbacks, really is just one split second in their mind, as they near their moment of death. If you recall when Desmond was on the island being tested with the electromagnetic machine by Widmore's people and he experienced those "flashes" of his life with Penny - he later asks Widmore how long he was out, and finds out it's only been a few seconds. Meanwhile he has "experienced" an entire lifetime in his mind. This "alternate" reality is his own mind's version of his happily after ever. Because it was a near-death experience for him, I believe that was why Desmond experienced it at that time. But for all the rest of them, their "alternate realities" are brought upon at their own moments of death. In the Series Finale, this was Jack's alternate reality because it was HIS moment of death. When he dies on the island, just as his eye is closing, he is experiencing this alternate universe that is his passage to heaven (his "purgatory" so to speak) - it is the place where he experiences love, where he is reunited with Kate, where he is able to "fix" John Locke, where he has a son... all of the things in his real life that he could not do...in this alternate world of his as he lay dying, he is able to experience the joys of true happiness before going on to Heaven. We learn at the end, when they all assemble at the church, this is Jack's "moment" - his actual passageway on his way into Heaven - and all the people he loves and cares about - the people who were a part of the most important time in his life, they are all there. I think the question that a lot of people were confused about was did they all die? Christian Shephard answered that question in that everyone dies, at some time. Some of them died years before, some of them lived years after the island into old age. Everyone dies. But in this place - at the church - there is no "now." There really is no concept of WHEN they are, just that they are all together again during the passage into Heaven. They were all there for Jack, because it was HIS time. And at the different times when each of the rest of them died, they will all be there again.

Another example is when Juliette says "It worked." This was just after they set off the bomb to try and "erase" their pasts and their entire existance on the island. They thought if the bomb went off , their plane would never crash on the island and they all would go about their normal lives in L.A. after the plane lands. However, the thing is that it did NOT work. They didn't erase their pasts. What Juliette meant when she said that it worked, is because in HER mind, it did work. She was dying, and she experienced the alternate reality as she was entering this new world "into the light" - a world where she met Sawyer again and realized they could be together. So the scene we saw of them meeting again at the vending machine, they touch and all of a sudden it comes back. The feelings of love, the memories of each other - this is HER alternate reality. It is different for everybody. And it comes at different times for everybody. But this was Juliette's meaning that "IT WORKED." Because for her, it did.

The key thing in the final scene at the church - was that it was a TIMELESS existence. It was kind of an intermediary between death and that "moving on" that Christian talked about. Kate asks Jack if he is ready to leave? This is the place where they go to "move on" to the next world, they move on into the light. (The light of the island - the place where they can all be with their loved ones). But the key point here is that they all died at different times, in different places, but this "timeless" alternate reality allows them all to be together again as they ascend into heaven.

Also, I think the reason that Ben did not go inside the church, was because he was not ready for redemption. We saw that in his own alternate reality, he recognizes how evil he was in his life. He apologizes to Locke for everything he did to him, and even though Locke forgives him, I think that Ben does not forgive himself. For everyone else, in their alternate realities, they have to be ready to "move on" into the light at this moment of their death. But for Ben, he was not ready. Which is why I believe he did not go into the church. Even though in his alternate reality, he IS a good man. This was the life that he wishes he could have had for himself, his "happily ever after." But he has to be able to redeem himself in order to move on towards heaven. After death, every one of the other survivors is able to move on because they have made peace with the sins of their past and have redeemed themselves in their "alternate realities" where they are able to find the things they've always been searching for (which really comes down to one thing for everyone: LOVE). But for Ben, he has not made peace with himself yet. So I think until he can do that, he just sits outside of the church but is not yet "ready" to go in.

Another big theme that I want to talk about is the whole idea of Jack and Locke being the Man of Science Vs. the Man of Faith. This was a theme that we have been seeing since the very beginning of the series. Where Jack was scientific, the doctor, who always needed concrete and scientific proof for things, but Locke was the man of Faith, believing that they all had a purpose on the island. For the longest time, Jack did not believe him. It wasn't until the "real" Locke's death that Jack finally started to believe. But at the very end, when Jack and Locke were dueling it out and trying to figure out which one of them was right, ultimately it is Jack who prevails. He kills fake-Locke. Therefore the original "Man of Science" wins. However, it is ironic that at this point, the Man of Science has BECOME the Man of Faith. He believes in Faith now. He believes in his purpose, his destiny on the island. And what is most ironic, is that he tells the Man in Black that it was John Locke who taught him that. He tells him that he may look like him, but he could never be like the real John Locke. He was a great man, and he should have listened to him from the beginning. Jack finally realizes that Locke was right all along, that he should have believed in FAITH. I think this is also really ironic in the whole concept of the show in general. All along, the entire series of LOST has been very scientific in nature: electromagnetism, science experiments, time travel, physicists, etc. - but when the show ended, they didn't need to give us a concrete scientific reason to explain everything, it all came down to FAITH. In the end, this is a show about faith, NOT science. It is about these characters and their soul-searching, the search for redemption, forgiveness. In the end, for each of them, it was their faith that brought them home "to the light."

Another ironic twist is that in the end it was Jack who needed to "let go." We have seen over the past couple of episodes that Desmond said he ran over Locke not trying to hurt him, but to help him let go. Jack also tells Locke the same thing. But in Jack's alternate reality, HE really is the one who needs to let go. Once he arrives at the church and sees his father, he finally realizes he is dead. He breaks down crying once he realizes this, but his father helps him to learn to let go. He tells him this is a place where they can move on. Once he is with the people he cares about, he finally is able to let go. I think this alternate reality that we see of him "letting go" at the church, is the exact moment on the island when he is dying. This is the moment where he realizes that he saved the island. He fulfilled his purpose. The light in the cave comes on again and he knows he did what he was meant to do. Dr. Jack Shephard - the surgeon who always wanted to "fix" everything - finally made the ultimate fix. He FIXED the island. It was about to be destroyed, but if it weren't for him going back into the cave to make sure the light went on again, the island would have sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Jack finally did the one thing that gave him purpose in life, something that before he came to the island, he was searching for that meaning in his life. He was LOST. Now, this gave him purpose and meaning. Once this happened, he was finally able to "let go." Just as he lay dying in the bamboo forest (in the exact spot where he started out on the island), looking up at the sky he sees the plane fly overhead that Lapidus is flying with Kate, Sawyer, Claire, etc. as they are finally leaving the island and on their way home. He felt that sense of accomplishment that because of what HE did, they were able to go home. Even more ironic because in his real life, he knew he could not be with Kate. He had to sacrifice himself by dying on the island, even though he loved her, he knew they could not be together. But his alternate reality - the experiences he had on his way into Heaven - allowed him to be with her again. This was all realized as he had those "flashes" of his alternate universe and he realized it was time to move on into the next world ("See you in another life, brother!") This gave Jack the clarity and meaning that he needed in order to "let go." He knew at that point he could finally move on, he could leave this world and enter the LIGHT. He was ready to die, and at that very moment, his eye closes.

BRILLIANT.

So...there we have it. I feel pretty good about the ending. I think it gave a sense of closure and I really enjoyed it. Now, I plan to go back and watch the Pilot episode (which I tivo'd on Saturday night but haven't rewatched again) and then will watch the Finale again. So hopefully I will gain some insight into some of the many clues along the way about how it will all end.

Now that this is the final episode, I think I deserve some blog love from all of you "anonymous" people out there who read my blog but never post comments. I know for a fact there are several hundred people who read my blog religiously! So let me know what you thought of the finale. What questions, if any, do you have? Were you happy with the ending or disappointed? I want to know what you think - so do me a favor and give my blogging a sense of "purpose" (like Jack's purpose on the island - LOL). You don't need to post your name. But, if you want me to answer you, you need to atleast sign your comment with your first name only so I can address you if I am going to comment back. Thanks for sticking with me for the past five years that I have written this blog!!! I can't believe I've been writing recaps for that long!!! How funny to go back and read some of my earlier theories on what the island was, who the Others were, and how I thought it was all going to end! Oh well, I have to gloat a little on my series finale predictions that I posted before the Finale in that most of them were right! Namely, the idea that the "light" of the island is a place where all of them go after they die to be with their loved ones again. Right on the money with that one!!!

I loved the finale! Just the way they brought closure was just perfect. I'll miss reading your blog Stacey :)

Stacy - Your blog has been fantastic over the past five years. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this; you have enhanced my enjoyment of the show with many concepts and observations I did not make on my own.
A couple of random thoughts about statements made on the show:
1. Juliet saying "it worked". That was what she said to Sawyer in the flash-sideways when she got the Apollo bar out of the candy machine for him. When she was dying on the island and made that statement, was part of her consciousness experiencing that "afterlife" moment?
2. "Letting go" - The Kimmel show showed a scene from this year's first episode, when the plane passes thru turbulence. Rose notices Jack's death-grip on the armrests and tells him "You can let go now". Talk about double meaning! I think Rose and Bernard were among the first to realize where they were in the flash-sideways.
3. "Not ready yet". I agree with your thoughts on Ben at the church. That was also the comment that Desmond made about Ana Lucia when she freed the three prisoners.

Thanks again for your blog. I too will miss reading it! - KG

I loved the finale! Especially after reading your blog. You've always helped me understand everything and catch things that I overlooked.

THANK YOU!!!!

Stacey -

A great finale and a great final blog by you. Some of your finest work yet. I agree, while the show was often a battle of science vs. faith, the end it is all about faith. The passengers of Oceanic 815 were LOST in many ways and when they finally found peace and happiness in their lives, they were able to move into the light. It is no surprise that it is LOVE that allowed most of them to find their peace and happiness...... "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

First off, I love your blog!

I do feel a little let down with the ending. I remember several seasons ago the writers/creators said everything was possible that happened on the island but they never answered the time travel/flashes and how they were possible. Also I feel like the Dharma people were left without and explaination along with why Ben brought Juliet to the island. Also, why was the island hidden, why was Desmond the one to bring them all back together and Eloise's comment that she thought he was going to stop that. Sorry I feel like there were so many loose ends - maybe not important to most people but I like answers.

I couldn't agree with you more. I loved the ending; totally brilliant! And a total tear jerker. I will miss LOST and your blog....what's the next big show???

I am sad I just found your blog this season, wish i had found it sooner. This season was more enjoyable because of you!
I didn't realize the sideways was not real til you said it. May be I was hoping it was real so that everyone was back together. It was a great ending. They answered all the big questions we needed for closure.
I thought the theme of Lost was awesome and a reflection of our soceity now. We have become a society of science, facts like Jack. We use to be one of faith, hope, & believing in light (Heaven) like John. I like the fact even with all this science in Jack's face he couldn't ignore he was missing something. He needed faith and hope in his life & without it you could find yourself Lost. I think it was an awesome message and one I did not see coming when this show started. I will really miss Lost and your blog. I will check in to see if you start a new one. :)

Sammy - you have been one of the ones reading since the very beginning I think!!

KG - So glad that you have enjoyed the blog! Good observation about Juliette's statement after Sawyer got the candy bar. I do think that her moment of death coincided with that moment, as did many of the others survivors. For example, when Kate was helping Claire have the baby, she gave her the same "speech" beforehand as she did when it really happened. Did you notice that Locke also said the same phrase..."it worked" after the surgery when he awoke to Jack. Same thing with the phrase about "you can let go now" with Jack on the airplane from this seasons first episode. I did notice when Rose said that to him, awesome double meaning!

Robin - I know a lot of people that have said they are disappointed with the ending for that very reason. Of course I still have TONS of questions that were left unanswered...for example I want to know about Walt and his "special" powers, why women died during pregnancy on the island, how they were able to keep the smoke monster out with those electronic fences, how Hurley and Miles were able to communicate with the dead...the list goes on and on. But like I said in my recap, I think the whole point of the writers NOT revealing some of the "scientific" mysteries of the island was just for the very reason that the show came down to FAITH over science. I think the idea is that you can come up with many different interpretations of the "scientific" answers based on the ending we got, making them more about faith, religion and spirituality. Going into the finale, I kept saying that if I didn't get all these answers I was going to be so disappointed, but honestly I wasn't! I really loved the ending exactly as it was. I can't wait to go back and watch it again :)

Susie - yes, definitely a tear jerker! When Jack realized he was dead and started crying and hugged his dad, that was it for me!! Great finale. No idea what the next big show is! And considering the only other shows I currently watch are pretty much fluff or reality shows (Desperate Housewives, American Idol, Survivor), I feel like I don't have any shows to "disect" any more! I never really got into the other shows like 24 or Flash Forward. LOST was always enough for me!!

Alison H. - That is so nice to hear that you enjoyed the show more because of my blog! Thank you. I actually will admit without a doubt that my earlier years of blogging were much better (before I had a baby, ha ha!) Now I have a 16 month old so the past two seasons of Lost have been a little more difficult for me to keep up. I think some of my better blog entries were during seasons 3 and 4. Anyway, still glad you found the blog this season and enjoyed it! I definitely agree with everything you said. I think the whole idea of the show is that the island was a metaphor for God/spirituality/religion - it is the same universally no matter what you believe in - but that you need a higher power to guide you and to give your life meaning. All of them were "lost" more in a spiritual sense before the island, and it was the island really who saved their souls in the end. The writers always made out the show to be about science fiction (which it was, of course), but deep down, like you said, no one ever expected it to be more religious and spiritual the way it turned out to be. I loved it. I truly think LOST is the greatest show ever written! I don't know that I'll start a new blog, but I still will add more posts to this one, as I start rewatching the series from the beginning (which I plan to do over the next several months), I'm sure I will pick up on things that seem so "obvious" now that I know the ending. I will post on here periodically about what I have seen as I watch the show from the start.

Hey Stacey--

I also liked the references in the 'Flash Sideways' where Jack's neck was bleeding where Locke had the knife to his throat during their battle on the rocks...ALSO...if you remember at the beginning of this season....when Jack first looked in the mirror and noticed a big scar on his lower right abdomen in the 'Flash Sideways' and wondered how that got there. , But it was actually where Locked stabbed him in the finale- just adding that the 'Flash Sideways' was after Jack died.

Thanks again for the recaps....very good insight throughout. It was also nice to print this out each week and just give this to my parents so I didn't have to explain a thousand things to them!

I actually was just given your blog address a couple of weeks ago so I am brand new to reading it, and what a bummer that I didn't have it to read the entire time! It probably would have cleared up a lot of confusion! :) I agree with what you said about Ben, but I also think he wanted to stay behind because Alex and Rousseau haven't "let go" yet, and he has this second chance to be a good father to Alex. Maybe he will cross over when they are both ready. After all, if you get to be with the ones you love when you go to the light, he would want to be with his daughter.

I have a question that is bugging the heck out of me. Everything you said in your blog is exactly what I thought after seeing the show and watching Jimmy Kimmel, and it made me feel so smart because I had it all figured out, lol. However, my sister reminded me of that last screen shot in the credits of the debris from the plane crash with no activity going on around it. That kind of leads you to believe that the plane actually did crash and they all died then. Which negates everything that I thought they were getting at in the finale. I had completely forgotten about it until my sister said something about it. What is your take on that? As of right now, I'm choosing to believe my original assumptions, which are exactly what you wrote in your blog, and just ignoring the plane crash!

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your thoughts each week. Sometimes I walked away from the show confused, and your thoughts would clarify things for me. I enjoyed the finale (tear-jerker for me). Your blog has been extremely helpful to me and my foggy brain at times.

Thank you, thank you, thank you a million times over Stacy for your fabulous blog! Many thanks to FsuSammy for introducing me to your blog years ago!

As another poster mentioned, reading your blog definitely opened my eyes to certain things I didn't catch when seeing the episodes. Your blog was definitely my LOST companion :) I would always read it and go over your theories with my husband. Many great talks formed from it! Although he never read the blog, he would always ask me, what did you the "Lost Blog girl say about last night's episode?" :)

The finale was incredible and although there was always a part of me that knew it was going to end that way, I absolutely loved it. The writers did an amazing job!

I just wish it didn't have to end. Now I will be the one that's LOST!

Kudos to you again Stacy! I look forward to your follow up posts!

Stacy,

It was an awesome episode. I loved it but, I was very confused in the ending. You helped clear up my confusion. Now, of course, I am still disappointed that we never found out where the heck that polar bear came from. LOL LOL Or, why Ben wanted Juliette for the Island. And like you said, "why did pregnant women die?" and other questions about the Island, and the light, and the numbers, The list really is long. LOL

I have loved reading your post over the past few years. You have always been on key for the predictions. I will miss your blogs. Maybe you can pick up on Fringe, it is pretty cool.

Great Blog! I was only able to read it a few times, but thank you as things would have been tough to figure out without your blog. I really liked the finale. The only thing I am a little confused on is if Jack died on the island at the moment Kate, Sawyer, Claire, etc. were leaving on the plane, why were Kate and Sawyer in the group there to greet Jack before he was to move onto the light?

I loved the finale and have enjoyed your blog for at least 3 seasons now. I will miss both the show and your recaps.

My only problem with the finale/season 6 is the temple and that crew. Why bother? Why build up those characters for so many seasons, introduce them, and kill them off after 3 episodes and never exlain them. It seemed a bot pointless. But other than that, fantastic show with a fantastc ending. What the hell am i going to do on Tuesday nights now?

Stacey- Thank you so much for dedicating so much time to your blog over the years. I have read it after every LOST episode and your recaps make everything more clear. You pick up on so many details and have allowed me to understand the show so much better. I might have thrown in the towel if it weren't for your blog. I have passed it on to all my friends who also watched the show. I often wonder if the LOST producers read it and think, "DAMN, that Stacey got it right again!"

Paul - totally agree. I loved how his side and neck were bleeding in the alternate world and I think you are right that was when he was stabbed and in the alternate world started to bleed then. Funny about printing this out for your parents. ha ha!!

Laura - I think everything on the show that is part of the show is up until when the black screen comes on with LOST in big letters. I think the stuff during the credits was just for fun. Actually I have read an article that said it did not mean anything. I think in true Lost fashion, they throw things in trying to mess with us.

alengirl and Shannon&Jon - you both are long time readers!! Thank you and I appreciate your comments :)

Shanna L - I'm glad I could help clear up any confusion! Certainly I am no expert, just posting my own thoughts, but glad that you enjoyed the blog. I know there were a lot of questions left unanswered, but I think that was on purpose...kind of showing us that in the end, it really didn't matter as it was all about faith and love. However, just to answer one question - we do know where the polar bear came from. The Dharma Initiative had brought polar bears to the island to conduct experiments, remember the cages where they kept Sawyer and Kate, that was where they were doing the experiments on the polar bears. They had brought lots of other animals to the island as well for experiments. But yes, lots of questions left unanswered.

Mike - Christian Shephard explained to Jack that everyone died at a different time, but that "this place" was a way for them all to be together again as they "move on" into the light. He also explained that there is no now, there is no sense of time. So, even though when Jack died (on the island), the others weren't dead yet (some may have gone on to live another 50+ years), they "figured out a way" for them all to be together in this "alternate world" so they could all help each other move on. I know that it doesn't make sense in the literal aspect, but that was the way Christian Shephard explained it to Jack. Because it is not a "real" world, these events were not actually happening, this was JACK'S progression into the afterlife, so for him, all of those people were there. I guess I would equate it to if a person is dying, and they have some kind of flashes of their life and all of their loved ones are there. They may still be alive in the real world, but as this person is dying and traveling "into the light" all of the people they love could be there with them.

David - Glad you've been reading the past several years. I think we needed to see the Temple so that we could understand more about "the darkness" and about how Sayid died and was brought back to life. I don't remember them introducing those characters from the Temple before this season??
And yes, I don't know what I am going to do Tuesday nights now!!! I need a new show to watch!

last poster - ha ha. I always joke with my husband every time I would come up with a new "theory" as to how it would end, that the producers were reading my blog and had to change everything since I had it all figured out from the very beginning. (yeah right). But it is nice to dream :)
Glad you have enjoyed the blog over the years, thank you.

Stace I'm going to miss your blog posts!! I'm pretty satisfied with the ending but being the detail freak that I am, I am annoyed at alllll of the unanswered questions about the smaller details. I know some (most) of them probably don't matter, but that drives me nuts! I want to know! It just annoys me that they introduced a million loose ends like that, that really had no point in the overall story.

When I first saw the plane wreckage at the very end I was like "oh crap what does that mean!!" but I read somewhere online that there were footprints on the beach. I think it was just a clip they wanted to show which represented the beginning of how all this happened - the plane crash.

I cried so many times during the finale. Every time in the flash sideways when they made those connections I lost it!!!

I'm gonna miss Jack!! I won't miss Kate though - damn she annoyed me! And I never saw the real connection between Sawyer & Juliette. From the beginning, I never liked her character for some reason.

What am I gonna do with no Lost now???
